I didn’t read for about ten years of my adult life. Then a friend gave me a book for my birthday, and I was obsessed.
Suddenly I was asking everyone I knew who read, “What should I read next?” Books they were obsessed with flopped for me. Books I recommended to them weren’t a good fit either. I quickly realized that if I wanted to protect my heart and my time, there had to be a better way than following friends, reviews or trends.
I’m a Type A person, so I built a spreadsheet to track every book—how it made me feel, what worked, what didn’t—and it slowly became a companion that warned me before the next one hurt. Somewhere along the way, it started to feel like texting a best friend who really gets my taste.
Before I knew it, my friends were texting me, “Can you ask Book Bestie what I should read next?” That’s when I wondered: what if I could take the brains of what I’d built and make it playful, beautiful and easy for anyone to use?
